DETECT scoring - correction factors

Dear experts,

I am using the DETECT card in order to simulate the detection efficiency of an HPGe detector.

I have the following questions:

  1. Does FLUKA consider the correction factor for coincidences?
  2. If yes, where can I find these correction factors?

Thank you,
Mihaela

Dear Mihaela,

FLUKA does not apply any correction factor to the DETECT scorings.

Cheers,
David

Dear David,

Thank you for your response.

However, when one wants to calculate the detection efficiency for various energies considering radioactive isotopes, the coincidence effects become important. Can this effect be taken into account with other scorings (e.g. EVENTBIN or mgdraw)?

Regards,
Mihaela

Dear Mihaela,

While I’m not an expert on HPGe detectors, if I understood correctly these correction factors can be calculated with Monte Carlo simulation, simulating the individual lines separately and then comparing it to the results obtained with the radionuclide. Then you can apply them during the analysis of the real data.

This paper may help: Calculation of Coincidence Summing Correction Factors for an HPGe detector using GEANT4 - ScienceDirect

I don’t think it is possible to apply the correction factors during the FLUKA run, because they have to be applied only for the peaks, but not for the background contribution coming from higher energy lines.

Cheers,
David

Dear David,

As you suggested, the factors can be calculated with MC simulations.
I was wondering if a formalism similar to the one described in the following paper that is used by GESPECOR code is implemented in FLUKA.
Accurate computation of coincidence summing corrections in low level gamma-ray spectrometry

Thank you,
Mihaela

Dear Mihaela,

unfortunately, this (or a similar) feature is not implemented in FLUKA.

Cheers,
David

Thank you, David!

Have a nice day,
Mihaela
