Eventbin bin size query

Dear Experts,
I would like simulate energy deposition in a small thin (300um) silicon sensor using EVENTBIN and use a very small mesh size, around 50um x 50um x 50um. Can I expect reasonable results from Fluka in this case? What dimensions can I safely go down to? In the simulation I’ll be using PRECISION settings, and probably single scattering too, but I’m wondering about STEPSIZE? (No magetic fields involved.) Any advice/recommendations appreciated.
Regards, Ian

Dear Ian,

with the use of MULSPOT, one can expect to get reasonable results down to dimension of 1 um. An example is given in slide 29 of the lesson on EM Interactions and Thresholds.

Regarding the use of the DEFAULT PRECISIOn, depending on your specific case, one might decide to decrease the transport threshold for the electromagnetic particles (lowest value is 100 eV for photons and 1 keV for electrons).

Finally, regarding the use of STEPSIZE, this should not impact the energy deposition since it is automatically set, particularly with the use of single scattering. Eventually, if some artifacts are visible in the results, I suggest to adapt the step of the particles with the use of FLUKAFIX and EMFFIX in order to tune it depending on the energy lost by the particle due to the stopping power. An example of a typical artifacts solvable by use of FLUKAFIX is shown in slide 14 of the lesson on Advanced Settings.

Hope this helps,
Giuseppe
