Organ volumes for dose normalization using USRBIN in Region mode with ICRP 145 mesh

Dear FLUKA experts,

I am using the ICRP Publication 145 mesh-type reference phantoms in FLUKA and would like to score the energy deposition in individual organs and tissues using USRBIN in Region mode.

My main issue concerns the subsequent normalization of the scored results. To obtain the dose averaged over each organ, I need to divide the energy deposited in the corresponding region by its mass, or equivalently by its volume multiplied by the appropriate material density.

However, I have been unable to find the individual organ and tissue volumes explicitly reported in ICRP Publication 145.

Could anyone advise me on how to obtain these volumes for the ICRP 145 phantoms implemented in FLUKA? Are they available in the original mesh files, in the FLUKA geometry definition, or in some supplementary dataset? Alternatively, is there a recommended way to calculate the volume of each organ directly from the mesh geometry or from the FLUKA region information?

I would be grateful for any suggestions or examples of how to extract these values reliably, as they are essential for correctly normalizing my USRBIN results and calculating organ-averaged doses.

Thank you very much for your help.

Best regards,
Andrea

Dear Andrea,

Thank you for your question.
The best approach would be to score the quantity DOSE with USRBIN on a region basis and then normalise the result by the region volume.

The simplest way to obtain the volume information is to inspect the output file of the simulation. For each organID you will have the corresponding volume in cm3. For example:

Alternatively you can use the organ masses and corresponding densities in the ICRP 145 Appendix tables and compute the organ volumes.

Best,
