The use of the LOW-PWSX card in FLUKA (FLAIR)

Description

Dear Professor,
I am conducting low-energy neutron simulation with polyethylene configured as the moderator. My question pertains to the use of the LOW-PWSX card in FLUKA (FLAIR) – I was unable to load the Point-wise Materials successfully. As for my settings:

 after running the corresponding inp file, h_Polyethy was not loaded in the generated out file, with h_water being called by default. 

Nevertheless,

h_Polyethy can be loaded successfully with my alternative settings.

I am uncertain whether this method is valid and if it can accurately reflect the moderation effect of polyethylene.

Dear Jiefeng,

Thank you for your question.

In the first case you present the reason it is not showing h_polyethly and instead hydrogen is due to how the LOW-PWXS card works. The thermal scattering acts on an isotope basis and not on a compound basis and so the input card is searching for an isotope and cannot find one so is falling back on the default.

And so your second card is quite correct as you are directing FLUKA to use to hydrogen in the h_polyethy data file.

If you want to add different hydrogen materials with different thermal scattering treatments you can use different FLUKA material definitions and different names.
