How to evaluate radiation damage of mixtures?

Hi Daniele,

Thank you very much for your reply! This is really helpful and clear to me and I appreciate it. I would also like to ask another question: how should FLUKA evaluate the radiation damage of mixtures such as this glass. I feel as if it is impossible to request DPA for this kind of material without damage energy threshold.

Thank you very much for your time and help.

Cheers,
Zhuorun

Hi Zhuorun,

It’s a pleasure. Dealing with radiation damage with amorphous materials is indeed delicate.
For those compounds, the definition and calculation of DPA is not straightforward, and it is common to evaluate the long-term ionization damage in terms of Gy.

Furthermore, relatively low-energy electrons hardly deposit enough energy in one interaction event to cause displacements (in comparison with protons/ions).

I would suggest to give this document a look: https://inis.iaea.org/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/46/066/46066650.pdf
In particular, chapter 6 contains many references that can help you.

Let me know if you have any further doubts.
Cheers,
Daniele
